Discover Who You Are!
Self-realization made real
“You are not who you think you are.” This has been the precious message of the yogis for millennia. Who are you, then? You are a divine being. You are not a mortal sinner. You are a child of Light. You are a Princess or Prince, child of the King of the universe.
This has many important implications.
Do you sometimes think that you are weak? Listen to the yogis who tell you that it is completely untrue. It’s a trap. You got caught by it and need to climb out, free yourself.
Do you sometimes think that you lack love? It is fully untrue. Open your heart and let the natural abundance of love flow. Let your natural live flow and you won’t miss anything anymore.
Do you think that you don’t understand? It’s not true either. Get into the silence and understand from your soul… Everything!
Do you think you are a woman or a man? Again, it’s just false. Rise above the body in meditation and feel you are a soul, free, blissfull, luminous.
Do you think you have to die? Wrong. How could a god die? Learn to touch the truth of your immortaily. Chase the fear of death away, it’s a gun without any gunpowder. Nobody dies.
Do you think your life is painful? Of course. Yet it is only so because you live in a superficial reality which is illusory. Practice your sadhana daily and get deep.
Pain and suffering are in fact a perversities. Think about it, “perversities”. Yogananda describes them with this exact word in his Autobiography of a Yogi: “Groveling, man knows well; despair is seldom alien; yet these are perversities, no part of man’s true lot. The day he wills, he is set on the path to freedom. Too long has he hearkened to the dank pessimism of his “dust-thou-art” counselors, heedless of the unconquerable soul.”
This is why since ancient times there is a hymn in India:
Asato ma SAT gamaya,
Tamaso ma, JYOTIR gamaya,
mrityoir ma AMRITAM gamaya:
“Lead me from untruth to Truth, from darkness to the light, from death to immortality.”
You suffer only because you are ignorant who you are and to Whom you belong.
You can be happy! More than that: lastingly happy. Yogananda brought back to you the ancient path and techniques of Self-realization with which you can find back your true happy Self.
What are practical applications of this teaching? There are so many.
For example, never say “I am tired”. Say instead, “I need some rest”. Otherwise you simply affirm the tiredness of your ego.
When things go wrong, never say: “I am a failure”. Instead affirm: “I haven’t yet succeeded.” Otherwise you just strengthen the ego.
Never identify yourself with your weaknesses, bad habits, black holes, bad behaviors, reactions, thoughts. You need to deal with them, of course, but they are NOT you. You are a child of God.
Work on aligning your thoughts to your soul and its qualities. In other words, think love, think light, think strength, think peace, and so on. Otherwise your mind will destroy your natural soul qualities. Instead teach it to strengthen them.
Walk straight through the streets of life while being relaxed. This will help your soul to shine more easily. A curved posture dims your soul and its beauty.
Fight, o yogi! The ego, the world, your karma, they all pull you toward the miseries of feeling small and inadequate. But you are a lion of God. Wake up! Shake off these false identifications. Affirm who you truly are. Meditate often on these powerful words of Yogananda:
Make me a lion of Thy all-conquering Wisdom
I, a lion-cub of the Divine Mother, found myself thrown into life among the sheep of human frailties: of fear, failure, and disease. Living long among them, I learned to bleat with weakness, forgetting my lion-nature and its roars, which could frighten away all petty, pestering sorrows.
O Lion of Realization, Thou didst drag me away from those bleating sheep to the mirror-smooth waters of meditation. There didst Thou cry, “Gaze!” But I held my eyes tightly shut, bleating with fear. Thy roar of wisdom then reverberated through my body. Thou madest me, by hard shaking and spiritual urging, open my eyes. And there, lo! in the crystal pool of my inner peace, I saw my features to be even as Thine own!
Now I know myself as the Lion of cosmic power. I will bleat no more with fear, weakness, and suffering, for I roar, now, with vibrant, almighty power! I bound about through the forest of all experiences, seizing little creatures of vexing worries, timid fears, and wild hyenas of disbelief, devouring them ruthlessly.
O Lion of Immortality, roar through me Thine all-conquering power of wisdom! ( God as Divine Mother, Paramhansa Yogananda, Swami Kriyananda)
